Leg 1 ¨C Playing caution to the wind
Clear skies and a bit of heat meant perfect
weather conditions as Leg 1 got on the way at the Pasar Besar
Kuala Rompin compound this afternoon. Thousands of spectators
lined the side of SS1 to watch the rally cars in action for
the first time here.
As predicted, a close fight between Mohd Shazly and Amir
Ahmad materialized as they took on SS2. However the pair driving
the monstrous turbo charged 4WD rally machines took to the
stages very cautiously. The Felda Selendang stage was very
tricky, rough, technical and taxing for the cars. By the end
of leg 1, Shazly leads Amir by just 43.4 seconds. Both admitting
not going all out risking damage to their cars, both Shazly
and Amir will be aiming to finish the rally not worrying who
comes in finish first or second.
It¡¯s a different story in the 2WD category. A close 10.8
seconds separates Haji Suhaimi and Mohd Shazmie. The later,(Shazly¡¯s
younger brother) returning to the championship after a short
break drove his Daihatsu Detomaso 1.3 very well to keep in
striking distance of Haji Suhaimi¡¯s 1.8 Proton Satria. Both
enjoying the new stages but at the same time also drove cautiously
to avoid disaster.
All the 10 cars made it to Pejabat Daerah Rompin for the
overnight Park Ferme. Leg 2 tomorrow will be a long day for
the competitors as all the cars will do a loop of 8 stages
covering 203 km before ending the event late Sunday afternoon.
Hope that the weather will remain at bay and provide the best
possible rally action for the folks of Kuala Rompin.
