Battle of the young guns
21/10/2018

The usual heat, dust and constant breeze was the perfect blend of the Rally of Perlis as it concluded Sunday afternoon. The 30 cars tackled the 2 loops of 6 stages with a total of 76 km of special stages. The record entry of 12 4WD cars and 18 2WD cars drew huge crowds along the stages eager to catch a glimpse of the rally action.

As expected, Unchallenged and uncatchable Rachmat won the rally out right. He kept his pace to cross the flying finish almost a minit clear from 2nd place Chepot and his One Motorsports BDRT Subaru Impreza. Chepot with his problems off leg 1 fixed, he blasted through the stage and climbed up the leaderboard to 2nd spot. Coming in 3rd is Karamjit Singh and his Gen 2 4WD. His experience and passion to rallying is highlighted when he deliver results with a car which is basically stock standard.

Throughout the day, there was a dig dong battle between the young guns with their 4WD machines. Chepot, Henzee, Shazmie and Dato Haniff all off which are in only their second event with the 4WD cars were consistently posting good stage time during the day. These are the next generation of Malaysian rally drivers. Missing from the 4WD list of finishers is Mohd Rafizal and Japanese Saturo Ito. Mohd Rafizal retired with a damaged engine while Saturo Ito damaged his Mitsubishi Lancer Evo x when he landed heavily after a jump. Henzee and Mohd Rafiq finished 4th and 5th respectively.

Securely planted in 8th place is the 2WD winner Mohd Khairul Nizam. Driving his Proton Satria fast and clean earned him maximum points and making up for his problems during the last round. 9th overall and 2nd in 2WD is Indonesian Putra Rizky and completing the top 10 and 3rd 2WD is local boy Azrul Azhar both of which are from MRU motorsports.

In total 28 of the 31 cars finished the rally. The Rally of Perlis has always been a rally with a high finishing rate and the favorite event among competitors. Next in the Malaysian Rally Championship 2018 calendar is the Rally of Terengganu. To be held during the monsoon season of December, it will an interesting finale of the season as the competitors will have a lot of rain and mud to drive through.
